Il a wilej: How Yucatec Maya Language Effects the Spanish in Yucatán
As residents of an area with such high levels of bilingualism, we can see that two or more languages coexisting can change the way we speak. This talk will focus on another language contact situation: the Spanish spoken in Yucatán, which is in contact with Yucatec Maya, an indigenous language spoken by almost a million people. In this talk, Dr. Kate Bove will give an overview of Yucatec Spanish that describes the sounds, structure, and meaning of Yucatec Spanish that makes this variety so unique. Many of these features can be traced to Yucatec Maya, which we will explore in detail.
