In Brazil, where abortion is illegal, tens of thousands of women use medications to terminate pregnancies each year. In 2021, I traveled to Salvador da Bahia and Belo Horizonte to interview both women seeking medical abortions and those illicitly supplying abortifacients in order to explore the complex dynamics that develop in areas that are increasingly similar to the terrain the U.S. is currently entering. Through the stories of three women who sought clandestine care in 2021, each under different circumstances, I will discuss how activists, doctors, and a network of women online are providing safe, though illegal, abortions in Brazil. Policy-makers, activists, and the medical community in the U.S. could learn much from these examples.
